And while others obviously took dedicated inspiration from old games, doing the same for just indie games is also essential to the point I am trying to make with Katana Zero. Indie games are getting comfortable now, not every single one needs to be an industry-shaking innovation anymore to be a near-masterpiece. This is a quintessential step for indie games because it shows age. What I mean by this is that games like Hot-line Miami were important enough to start zeitgeists or make sub-genres. What is important about this, however, is that Katana Zero innovates more than it created. Katana Zero is a game in a long line of masterworks from smaller studios. The indie scene had already exploded time and time again and (what can basically go without saying) validated itself. Katana Zero released post-Hotline-Miami, post-Undertale, post-Celeste. I cannot stress how important this release date is. Katana Zero is an indie 2D action platformer released in 2019.
